Living in Mentawai: a surfers’ paradise off Sumatra
Everything an investor should know about the islands — the surf that made them famous, how to get there, daily life, and the culture you will be part of.
About 150 km off West Sumatra
The Mentawai Islands Regency was formed in 1999 and is home to roughly 100,000 people across more than a hundred named islands. Four main islands carry almost all of the population and land.
Why the world’s surfers keep coming back
Since surf charters began arriving around 1990, Mentawai has become a bucket-list destination. Consistent Indian Ocean swell meets dozens of reef passes, producing perfect, uncrowded waves for every level.

Why invest in Mentawai
A surfers’ paradise
Mentawai is one of the most famous surf destinations on earth. About 6,000 visitors came specifically to surf in 2024 — and they come back every season.
Visitor numbers rising
29,000 visitors in 2024, around 5,000 more than in 2023, according to the regency tourism office.
Entry price
Coastal land still trades in the hundreds of thousands of rupiah per m², not the millions common on Bali’s coast.
Improving access
Fast boats from Padang to Tuapejat, small-aircraft flights to Rokot and a growing road network on Sipora.
Protected nature
Siberut is a national park and UNESCO biosphere reserve. Low-density development keeps the islands — and their value — intact.
Clear legal routes
Leasehold, PT PMA with HGB title, or Hak Pakai — proper structures exist, and our Padang legal team sets them up end to end.

Schedules and fares change with season and weather. We help arrange transfers and accommodation for site visits.
One of Indonesia’s oldest living cultures
The Mentawai people are known for their uma clan longhouses, the healers called sikerei, and traditional full-body tattoos (titi). Land is tied to clan identity, which is why we treat customary consent as a matter of respect as well as law.
Good projects here hire locally, build at low density, protect the reef and mangroves, and give the community a stake in visitors’ spending.
What to expect on the ground
Climate
Tropical, 26–32 °C all year. Rain falls in every month; the wettest period is typically late in the year.
Connectivity
4G around Tuapejat and north Sipora; satellite internet for remote villas and lodges.
Visas
Most nationalities enter on a visa on arrival or e-VOA. Investors and directors of a PT PMA can apply for an investor KITAS.
Living in Mentawai: common questions
When is the best time to visit Mentawai?
April to October brings the most consistent swell and is peak surf season. November to March is quieter and greener, with smaller waves — a good time for site visits without the crowds.
How do I get from Padang to Sipora?
By fast boat from Padang to Tuapejat (about 3.5–4 hours, several departures a week), by overnight ferry, or by small-aircraft flight to Rokot. Schedules change with the season and weather, so keep a buffer day.
Is there internet and electricity?
Tuapejat and much of north Sipora have grid power and 4G data. Remote coasts rely on solar and satellite internet, which work well for villas and lodges.
What about healthcare?
Tuapejat has a regional hospital and clinics for basic care; serious cases are referred to Padang. Travel insurance with evacuation cover is recommended.
